Lecture: Between Museology and User Experience 


BIO

Sandro Debono Ph.D. (Lond.) is a museum thinker and change-maker mainly active as an academic and advisor based in the Mediterranean island of Malta. His practice straddles theory and extensive experience leading the rethink of a national museum in Malta into a more inclusive and participatory institution. Coming from a background in art history and visual culture studies, he has also curated major international exhibitions in Italy, Brussels, and Malta. He is also a well-published author in art history and museum studies with a focus on the use of digital within museums, collections development practices and participatory experiences. 


Dr Debono is culture advisor to the Office of the President of the Republic of Malta, an associate lecturer in museum studies and other related subjects at the University of Malta, the national representative at the European Museum Academy, and sits on the international advisory board of the Anchorage Museum, Alaska U.S.A. He has also worked as an advisor on projects led by the national gallery of Serbian Art Matica Srbska purposely developed for Novi Sad Capital of Culture 2022. He has also been very active with the international platform, We Are Museums, serving on the advisory board and subsequently, co-founder of We Are Museums Lab, the legal association under French law behind the platform. His latest project includes the co-convening of an international conference at the University of Malta on museum futures entitled MUŻE.X - Shaping Museum Futures with participants from Europe, America and Asia.  


The French government has recently awarded Dr Debono with the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres for his outstanding contribution to arts and culture.
